Cortina d’Ampezzo is the closest major Dolomites ski resort to Venice, and most winter visitors fly into Venice Marco Polo. The drive is short and scenic, but winter brings its own rules: snow equipment, Saturday traffic and a lot of luggage. Here is what to know before you book.
The route and how long it takes
From Venice Airport the road follows the A27 motorway to Belluno and then climbs through the Cadore valley to Cortina. In normal conditions the trip takes about 2 hours. In heavy snow, or on Saturdays when hotels change guests, allow an extra 30 to 60 minutes.
| From Venice Airport to | Drive time | Car | Van |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cortina d’Ampezzo | about 2 h | from €380 | from €430 |
| Alta Badia (Corvara) / Arabba | about 2 h 45 | from €440 | from €490 |
| Val Gardena (Ortisei, Selva) | about 3 h | from €460 | from €510 |

Snow, chains and winter tyres
In the Veneto mountains, winter tyres or snow chains on board are compulsory during the winter season, usually from mid-November to mid-April. All our vehicles run on winter tyres in this period, and our drivers know these roads in every weather.
Snowfall on your travel day?
We check the forecast and road reports the day before and contact you if we suggest leaving earlier. Safety first, always.
Skis, boots and luggage
- Ski and snowboard bags travel free of charge. Please add them in the booking notes.
- Ski luggage takes space: for 3 people with ski bags, a van is more comfortable than a car.
- Child seats and boosters are available on request.
Avoid the Saturday rush
Most hotels in Cortina change guests on Saturday, and the airport and mountain roads are busiest between late morning and evening. If you can choose, a Sunday or midweek arrival is calmer, and an early-afternoon pick-up gets you to the hotel before dark.
